October 2026
There is something especially welcome about October in Houston. After months of heat and humidity, the first cooler mornings feel like an invitation to step outside again. Patios come back to life, and even an ordinary evening feels better when the air is finally comfortable enough to linger.
At Strong Landscaping, we believe outdoor spaces are more than landscapes. They are the backdrop for life's meaningful moments: football weekends, neighborhood walks, family dinners on the patio, and children racing through the yard as daylight fades.
This is also when the entrance to a home starts to matter most. A neatly maintained walkway, refreshed beds, seasonal color, and a few well-placed pumpkins create a warm welcome before anyone reaches the door. If you'd like your porch ready for the season without the hassle, our Fall Porch Pumpkin Displays are designed and installed by our team to complement your home's entrance. Quantities are limited, so reserve yours soon at stronglandscaping.com/shop and we'll take care of the rest.
Milder weather also makes October one of the most valuable months for the landscape itself. Plants recover from summer stress, watering needs shift, and conditions favor planting trees, shrubs, and perennials. It's the right time to look ahead, too. The holidays arrive quickly, and cleaning patios, shaping shrubs, refreshing mulch, and checking lighting now means your property will be ready before the busiest part of the year.
October reminds us that a landscape does not need to be in full bloom to be beautiful. Ornamental grasses moving in the breeze, warm light across a garden path, a porch dressed for the season: these are the details that make a home feel cared for.
We hope your outdoor space gives you a reason to step outside, gather with the people you love, and enjoy the change in the air.
Because the best landscapes do more than change with the seasons. They help us enjoy them.
Happy October from Strong Landscaping!

In Houston, fall is the best time to plant. Cooler air eases stress on new plants, while warm soil keeps roots growing. Instead of pushing out leaves and flowers, plants put their energy below ground.
That head start matters here. Houston's heat often arrives by late spring, leaving spring plantings only weeks to settle in. A tree, shrub, or perennial planted in October has all fall and winter to establish, so by summer its roots are deeper and it needs less water.
Give each plant room to reach its mature size, water slowly and deeply even when it's cool, and check the soil before watering again. Fresh mulch holds moisture, but keep it a few inches from trunks and stems.
The Garden Guru's Advice: Plant this fall for the landscape you want next summer. The roots you build now carry your garden through the heat.

October is when Houston landscapes begin to move from summer survival into true fall renewal. Temperatures may still fluctuate, but cooler mornings, shorter days, and occasional rain give plants a chance to recover from months of heat. This is the point in the year when thoughtful maintenance and well-timed planting can make an immediate difference while also preparing the landscape for the seasons ahead.
Lawns should be watched closely this month. As nighttime temperatures cool and moisture lingers longer, St. Augustine grass can become vulnerable to large patch, which often appears as expanding yellow or brown areas with irregular edges. Reducing unnecessary watering, improving drainage, and avoiding heavy late-season nitrogen applications can help limit the conditions that encourage fungal problems.
Garden beds are also ready for attention. Declining summer annuals can be removed, weeds cleared, and mulch refreshed before fall color is installed. Houston’s October weather can still be unpredictable, so it is often best to transition beds gradually. Heat-tolerant plants may continue performing while cooler-season varieties are introduced once daytime temperatures become more consistent.
This is one of the best times of year to install trees, shrubs, and perennials. Warm soil encourages root development, while milder air temperatures reduce stress above ground. Newly installed plants will still need deep, consistent watering as they establish, but planting now gives their roots valuable time to grow before the return of summer heat.
Irrigation schedules should also begin changing with the season. Landscapes generally lose moisture more slowly as temperatures fall and daylight decreases, which means summer watering routines may provide more water than plants need. Checking the soil before watering and adjusting each irrigation zone individually can help prevent both waste and moisture-related problems.
The theme for October is recovery paired with renewal. It is a month for addressing the effects of summer, introducing new plants thoughtfully, and helping the landscape settle into cooler weather. With the right care now, outdoor spaces can remain healthy, colorful, and welcoming throughout fall and well into the holiday season.
